About the album

After Anette von Eichel opened a small window for the audience in 2001 with her debut CD “Welcome To My World” to let people discover a previously unknown vocal talent, the spectacular and official start of her career was in 2004 with the release of “Get Out Now” in the beginnings of Jazz thing Next Generation. She has been teaching at the Academy of Music and Dance in Cologne as a professor of jazz singing since 2010. Nevertheless, she realigns her musical parameters and surprises with releases that stand out from the enormous sea of sound recording media in a pleasantly unpretentious way. After “Golightly” (Double Moon DMCHR 71106) from 2012, a duo CD in 2017 and a Mingus project in 2019, “Inner Tide” is now her next work.

The album unites a top-class instrumental combo with pianist Sebastian Sternal, bassist Henning Sieverts, drummer Jonas Burgwinkel and saxophonist Jonas Blom, in which the names alone prove that they cannot be reduced to mere accompanists. “This is exactly where I am now,” Anette von Eichel described the core statement of the nine titles of “Inner Tide”. For her, it is a sign of the way, as always, when the singer, after a supposedly quieter public phase, comes out into the open again, deeply authentic, prominently, the field staked out with the “Eichel” brand. Or as she puts it laughingly: “Pure Me.” Her older albums always featured pieces by others that fit her well. “Now, for the first time everything comes from me, not only the lyrics, but also the entire music. This is a big and important step for me, almost a new phase of my identity. And the result really makes me very, very happy!”

“Inner Tide”, the motto of the album, describes the intention of the vocalist, for whom improvisation is an essential part of her self-conception. It's about the inner tides, these special moments between emotional low and tides. “This is how I sweetly pass through my days and nights, a bit out of this world, humming, rising and sinking with my Inner Tide,” as expressed in the last verse of the song “Secret Garden.” Anette von Eichel: “Everyone has these secret gardens in their inner self, into which they retreat again and again, where they can let themselves fall and feel all the ups and downs.” She does this in her inimitable way and with the intuitive sense of being able to use her own voice as an instrument. Especially when you listen attentively to Anette von Eichel, one of the most intonation-assured, steadfast jazz vocalists on the German scene, you suddenly remember how important hitting the right tone in the context of a successful performance can actually be.

“I even see getting older an advantage,” the 49-year-old admitted with disarming openness. “I know myself better, can do more than 10, 15 years ago, and listen better, both harmoniously and rhythmically. And my voice has also developed. Not so much the lyrical mezzo-soprano I was at a young age, but more adult, more mature.” This is also what satisfaction and being in harmony with yourself sounds like. In fact, “Inner Tide” reveals the best ever Anette von Eichel. “It was my idea to listen to my inner self.” she said.
Nachdem Anette von Eichel 2001 mit ihrer Debut-CD „Welcome To My World“ ein kleines Fenster für das Publikum öffnete, um ein bis dato unbekanntes Vokaltalent entdecken zu können, erschien 2004 in der Anfangsphase der Jazz thing Next Generation mit „Get Out Now“ der spektakuläre und offizielle Startschuss ihrer Karriere. Seit 2010 unterrichtet sie an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln als Professorin für Jazzgesang. Dennoch richtet sie regelmäßig ihre musikalischen Parameter neu aus und überrascht mit Veröffentlichungen, die sich auf angenehm unprätentiöse Weise aus dem gewaltigen Tonträger-Meer abheben. Nach „Golightly“ (Double Moon DMCHR 71106) von 2012, einer Duo-CD 2017 und einem Mingus-Projekt 2019 folgt nun „Inner Tide“.

Das Album vereint mit dem Pianisten Sebastian Sternal, dem Bassisten Henning Sieverts, dem Schlagzeuger Jonas Burgwinkel und dem Saxofonisten Jonas Blom eine hochkarätige Instrumentalcombo, bei der schon die Namen allein belegen, dass sie sich beileibe nicht aufs bloße Begleiten reduzieren lässt. „Genau hier stehe ich jetzt gerade“, beschreibt Anette von Eichel die Kernaussage der neun Titel von „Inner Tide“. Für sie sind es Wegmarken, wie immer, wenn die Sängerin nach einer vermeintlich ruhigeren öffentlichen Phase wieder ihren Kopf aus der Deckung reckt, zutiefst authentische, markante, in den Boden gerammte Pflöcke der Marke „Eichel“. Oder wie sie es lachend formuliert: „Pures Ich“. Auf ihren älteren Alben fanden sich bislang immer wieder Stücke aus fremder Feder, die gut zu ihr passten. „Nun stammt zum ersten Mal alles von mir, nicht nur die Texte, sondern auch die komplette Musik. Das ist ein großer und wichtiger Schritt für mich, quasi eine neue Phase meiner Identität. Und das Resultat macht mich wirklich sehr, sehr glücklich!“

„Inner Tide“, das Motto des Albums, beschreibt die Intention der Vokalistin, für die Improvisation ein wesentlicher Bestandteil ihres Selbstverständnisses ist. Es geht um die inneren Gezeiten, diese besonderen Momente zwischen emotionaler Ebbe und Flut. „This is how I sweetly pass through my days and nights, a bit out of this world, humming, rising and sinking with my Inner Tide“ heißt es in der letzten Strophe des Songs „Secret Garden“. Anette von Eichel: „Jeder trägt diese geheimen Gärten ins sich, in die er sich immer wieder zurückzieht, wo er sich fallen lassen und dem ganzen Auf und Ab nachspüren kann.“ Dies tut sie auf ihre unnachahmliche Weise und dem intuitiven Gespür, die eigene Stimme wie ein Instrument einsetzen zu können. Gerade wenn man Anette von Eichel aufmerksam zuhört, einer der intonationssichersten, gefestigtsten Jazz-Vokalistinnen der deutschen Szene, dann fällt einem schlagartig wieder ein, wie wichtig das Treffen des richtigen Tones im Kontext einer gelungenen Darbietung eigentlich sein kann.

„Ich sehe es sogar als Vorteil, älter zu werden“, gibt die 49-Jährige mit entwaffnender Offenheit zu. „Ich kenne mich besser, kann mehr, als noch vor 10, 15 Jahren, und höre besser, sowohl harmonisch wie auch rhythmisch. Und auch die Stimme entwickelt sich. Nicht mehr so ganz der lyrische Mezzosopran, der ich in jungen Jahren war, sondern erwachsener, reifer.“ So klingt auch Zufriedenheit und Mit-sich-im-Reinen-sein. Tatsächlich offenbart „Inner Tide“ die beste Anette von Eichel, die es je gab. „Es war meine Idee, ein Ohr nach innen zu haben“, sagt sie.

Two other striking qualities of Anette von Eichel as a singer and a musician are her way of moving in the interplay of a band and Anette’s personal charme that radiates in her singing and in her performance on stage.

Having grown up in the countryside in the north of Hessen Anette von Eichel studied Jazzsinging at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (NL) from 1994-1998 with a.o. Rachel Gould, Ineke Heijliger, Jeanne Lee and Frans Elsen. She also studied the history of European Expansion at the Rijksuniversiteit in Leiden (NL) from 1995 on. In 1998 Anette did her bachelor’s degree for Jazzsinging, in 2000 followed her bachelor in history and her master degree in Jazzsinging with distinction.

In 2001 Anette published her debut cd „Welcome To My World“ that was welcomed warmly by the critics. Further CD productions and music projects followed that established collaborations with e.g. Jasper Blom, Jonas Burgwinkel, Rainer Böhm, Wolfert Brederode, Hein van de Geyn, John Hollenbeck, Marko Lackner, Robert Landfermann, Florian Ross, Jesse van Ruller, Matthias Schriefl a.o.

With her new project „Golightly“ Anette has published her latest CD in September 2012. In this project she has found a new Dream Band with Florian Ross (hammond), Jesse van Ruller (git), John Hollenbeck (dr) and Jasper Blom (sax, clar). Musical Godmother of the project is Holly Golightly, the heroin of Truman Capote’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s and the way she sees the world. The music is trying to give the listener a sound portrait of Holly’s character.

Anette sees herself as a Jazzsinger and a Jazzmusician. Musically it is important for her to always be in dialogue with her fellow musicians and to taste the dynamics of the music on one level with them. Jazzsinging to her is the interaction of song, poetry and improvisation – always in the energetic exchange with her fellow musicians. Important topics in this respect are the interpretation of music with the means of sound, phrasing, timing, arrangement and improvisation and the everlasting search for the moment of magic that music can give us.

Next to her work as a singer Anette soon recognized her love for teaching singing and Jazzmusic in general. Since 2010 she is Professor for Jazzsinging at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne (Germany). Before she was offered this position Anette taught at several schools e.g. the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the departments for Jazz at the Musikhochschulen in Cologne and Osnabrück (Germany).
In 2006 Anette moved back to Germany where her current residence is in Cologne. Anette is married and has two daughters.
